Rosebank Sports have been serving Northwich and its surrounding area since the late 1970’s. The original family business values of good service, excellent product knowledge and fair prices are still upheld today. We are proudly regarded as a “Proper Sports Shop” This is a short story of how we began.
During the summer of 1978 Richard Turner retired from his job at Barclays Bank, and supported by his wife Rose,
established Rosebank Sports. It traded from a small shop in the village of Goostrey, Cheshire. The main trade of these premises was table tennis.
The founder (Richard Turner) traveled to many table tennis tournaments and
events to set up stalls. The actual shop was only a very small size, but stocked a wide range of products. This didn't just include sports: Richard used to sell wellies and umbrellas from the shop too!
In December 1982 Rosebank Sports moved to its current location in Northwich, situated at the top end of Witton Street. As business expanded and the reputation grew, the old shop became unsuitable. Therefore Richard obtained a very
attractive property in a fantastic Tudor-style building.
This new shop front has since become a solid base for the business. Although the business expanded into many different properties (at one point there were five different
stores) Witton Street in Northwich has always remained the prime shop.
In October of 1998 Rosebank Sports underwent a complete refit of the interior, to open up both of its floors to sales of sports goods. The upstairs used to house furniture and other items such as brass ware.
However, this
side of the business was disbanded and the business solely focused on sports alone. The shop went from looking tired and dated, to a modern comfortable, attractive store. This refit has given the shop the professional feel
the business has aimed for.
In July 2002 Rosebank Sports became a member of Intersport UK, a large buying group of independent
sports traders.
In August 2002, during the Commonwealth games held in Manchester. The shop was visited by a surprising guest! The Jamaican Commonwealth Badminton Team traveled from Manchester to the shop in order to purchase some Yonex badminton shoes, as they had left all of theirs back home!
In October 2003 Rosebank Sports celebrated 25 years in business with a dinner dance celebration at Cottons
Hotel in Knutsford, attended by many past customers and suppliers. This was the first time the business had a time to reflect on how far it had come and how much it had achieved in the past 25 years. The night was made very
special by the attendance and incredible support of many supporters and regular customers.
Sadly on Sunday 1st April 2007, the founding partner of Rosebank Sports Richard Turner passed away, at age 79. A truly dedicated, passionate, family-oriented business man, he set up the company after retiring from his successful
career at Barclays Bank. Sport was a large passion of Richard and his family who were all keen table tennis players.
The company Richard set up, initially as an interest, soon became a very successful family business and
a legacy which passed down through the family. The company became a representation of the strong character, good working ethic and social strength Richard was known for.
On 1st November 2008 the old partnership was dissolved and Rosebank Sports was established with Tony and
Terry Turner as its Directors. Tony and Terry Turner continue to run the business today and strive to expand the business as successfully as what was achieved in the past.
All this while keeping a firm footing on the guiding
principles of the company: to ensure a passion for sports and enthusiastically assist its customers in obtaining the right equipment and clothing for their sport. A passion for sport runs through the family and a passion for
sport certainly runs through the business!
